What is the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter)?

Most diesel passenger cars, vans and commercial vehicles, built after 2006 have a DPF (diesel particulate filter) installed in the exhaust system. Some vehicles like Peugeot, Citroen & Fiat have had them fitted since 2001. This is a filter designed to reduce the soot particles created from engine combustion from entering the atmosphere.

What does it do?

The diesel particle filter removes polluting chemicals that result from diesel combustion before these particles of polluting matter reach the tailpipe and enter the atmosphere. It works similar to a catalytic converter by trapping and re-heating pollution.

Eventually all DPF filters will clog up at some time. Most manufacturers will swear this will be a long time, but since the technology is so new we will only find out through time how long they last. They are not cheap to replace and this has a lot of diesel aficionados worried.

The diesel particle filter itself creates an obstruction in the exhaust system. Combine this with the diesel catalytic converter and you have created several pounds per square inch of blockage on your exhaust pipe.

So what´s is involved in DPF removal? It’s a two part process starting with some hardware removal ?

First of all, the DPF hardware, in particular the contents of the filter known as a “brick” needs to be removed from the exhaust system and this can be achieved via two methods;

• a replacement pipe can be fitted (only available on some vehicles) or
• the current DPF pipe can be modified by removing the DPF brick from the inside. Both of these methods are permanent and tested.

Now that the DPF is gone, we have to disable the DPF function in the vehicles ECU

The vehicles operating software needs to be removed/disabled from the ECU of the vehicle so that the active and passive regeneration cycles, and any other DPF functions are no longer in operation. This can be done via removing the ECU and programming it on the bench, via OBD programming and sometimes by fitting specialist devices to the
vehicle. In most cases this also incorporates a sophisticated remap resulting in substantial gains in bhp, torque & economy.
